GTA VI Online Expected as Standalone Release in 2027

GTA VI Online concept

Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on November 19, 2026 as a strictly single-player experience, with a standalone GTA VI Online mode widely expected to follow as a second major release in 2027, according to multiple industry analysts and outlets including IGN and GameRant.

Rockstar's pre-order page explicitly describes GTA VI as "a single-player" game, marking a clear departure from GTA V's model where Online launched alongside the campaign. This has led to widespread speculation that the next iteration of GTA Online will arrive as a separate product months after the main game.

When Could It Launch?

Historical patterns suggest several windows. GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA V in 2013 โ€” but that release was notoriously plagued with server issues. Red Dead Online arrived roughly a month after Red Dead Redemption 2 in late 2018, then hit its official 1.0 launch in May 2019, six months later.

IGN's Simon Cardy points out that Rockstar is including a free month of GTA+ with GTA VI pre-orders, which could be timed to expire just as Online launches โ€” creating a natural subscription conversion funnel. He projects an early-to-mid 2027 window for a proper Online launch, possibly following a beta period.

A Second Industry-Shaking Release

GameRant describes this as Rockstar's "1-2 punch" โ€” the single-player campaign dominates late 2026, then Online returns to shake up 2027's release calendar just as aggressively. GTA VI's November launch has already caused a pile-up of games in September as publishers steer clear. An Online launch in early 2027 could cause a similar domino effect on spring releases.

Games like Fable (2027), Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and God of War: Laufey all have uncertain windows that may shift depending on when GTA VI Online lands.

What About Pricing?

The big open question: will GTA VI Online be a free addition, a standalone purchase, or require a GTA+ subscription? Rockstar Intel suggests it may be a separate paid product, potentially priced around $30 โ€” bringing the total cost for the full GTA VI experience to $130 between the $80 standard edition and Online.

Free-to-play with Shark Card monetization is another possibility, but given the Ultimate Edition already pushes content gating boundaries, a paid standalone Online seems increasingly plausible.

The Waiting Game

Rockstar has steadfastly refused to comment on Online, and no official announcement has been made. But with GTA VI pre-order pages explicitly labeling the game as single-player, and the enormous financial incentive to launch Online as a separate product cycle, a 2027 release seems all but inevitable. The only questions now are exactly when โ€” and at what price.
